A "chamber music collective of some of the brightest young classical musicians in the world..." (TimeOutNY), DECODA explores creativity, community, and identity through live performance and dynamic engagement. The first-ever Affiliate Ensemble of Carnegie Hall, Decoda brings impactful musical experiences to communities around the globe through concerts in major international venues and projects with vibrant community partners.
Whether performing for young children, healthcare facility residents and employees, incarcerated individuals or traditional classical music lovers, Decoda engages audiences through lively performances, interactive concerts, and enlightening discussions that provoke creative insight into the music. Decoda is committed to supporting the international community of artists who wish to deepen their involvement with interactive performance and engagement, principles at the heart of Decoda’s mission. To assist in this capacity-building, Decoda has established the annual Decoda/Skidmore College Summer Chamber Music Institute (DSCMI), the Decoda Institute in South Africa (DISA), and annual residencies in Merida, Mexico and as the Resident Ensemble in Creative Performance at the Guildhall School of Music in London, UK.
Now in it’s 5th season, Decoda’s engagements have included performances at the Southbank Centre and the Barbican (London), Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Germany), Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Festival (UAE), Mainly Mozart Festival (San Diego), Bay Chamber Concerts (Maine), Við Djúpið Festival (Iceland),Carnegie Kids @ Suntory Hall (Tokyo), National Center for the Performing Arst (Mumbai), Programa de Educación Musical Fomento Cultural Banamex & Carnegie Hall (Mexico), the Performing Arts Center at SUNY Purchase, and the Chelsea Music Festival, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and National Sawdust in New York City. Since 2011, Decoda has participated in Carnegie Hall's Musical Connections Program, undertaking creative projects at Sing Sing Correctional Facility, Beth Abraham Hospital, Clinton High School in Bronx, NY and Valley Lodge Shelter.
Music for Transformation, Decoda’s justice initiative, facilitates intensive creative songwriting projects for vulnerable and disenfranchised populations in the areas of criminal and social justice. Empowering the voices of a frequently-ignored community, Music for Transformation has been recognized by CNN, Huffington Post, the Associated Press, the Washington Post, and Billboard Magazine. In the past season, Decoda was invited by President Obama’s administration to perform on two occasions at the White House at events dedicated to the arts and criminal justice reform.

DISA INFO
Following on the success of DECODA’s training institutes in New York, London, and Merida, Mexico, the ensemble, in partnership with the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival, launches the DECODA Institute South Africa (DISA), a 5-day seminar open to young South African chamber musicians who seek to broaden their artistic and communicative skills in order to bring their music to ever-larger audiences, particularly those who have little experience with classical music. Participants will engage in an interactive and collaborative process with DECODA musicians, performing in masterclasses, seminars and coachings, and will have the opportunity to practice their newly-acquired skills for live audiences under the guidance of DECODA musicians. Observers from around the country are invited to attend free of charge.
The DECODA Institute South Africa (DISA) will provide a generation of young South African musicians with the communicative skills to effectively engage audiences of all ages and backgrounds through interactive and creative performance, thereby expanding the reach and impact of classical music throughout South Africa.
